    BLACKJACK HISTORY

The beginning of blackjack is not known in every detail. Blackjack is in some way related to the card game baccarat.

A more obvious forerunner to blackjack is an old French game called vingt-et-un (twenty-one.) It was played regularly in France and came to the US in the 19th century.

    Great odds on the blackjack

At the time when vingt-et-un became trendy in the Northern parts of the country, a rule stipulated that if you made 21 with a two-card hand containing a black jack, you won ten times your bet. A feature that later was cut down, like it or not.
Today a two-card 21 (Blackjack) wins you 3:2 no matter what cards it includes.

    The basic strategy in blackjack

Contrary to many casino games, in blackjack it’s not always evident what is your best move. With a 13 against the dealers 8, should you hit or stand?  Using computers, people eventually managed to concoct a perfect strategy. It tells you what the best move is in every possible hand match-up.

Thorp turned the tables on casinos.

Edward Thorp was first as far as we know to prove that you can actually beat the game of blackjack by counting cards and varying your bet sizes.  A professor at MIT, he wrote a book that revolutionized the game and brought along some great histories of war between gamers and casinos. The book is called Beat the Dealer, and it’s still a pleasurable read, although somewhat overtaken.

Betting bigger when the deck is favorable

Card counting builds on the fact that your chances are slightly better if there are a lot of high cards left in the deck, since then the dealer will bust more often. By betting big when the deck is hot and small when it is not, the house edge can be turned around.

When card-counting players started winning consistently, the casinos were fast to change the conditions of the game. Players reacted with boycott, and eventually casinos reverted to the old rules.

Still, casino management frowns hard on card counting and reserves the right to put off winning players without other grounds than that they are winning.

Changing strategy when the deck is favorable

To avoid being spotted, card counters changed methods. Instead of varying their bet sizes, which became very evident to alerted casino staff, they started using modified betting strategies depending on the card count.

The fact that a player chooses to hit or stand in a certain match-up is obviously much more difficult to spot. Even more so if the smart card counter refrains from the weirdest deviations from the basic strategy.
